Friday, September 21, 2012 KiKi Shepard’s K.I.S. Foundation hosted the 9th Annual Celebrity Bowling Challenge at PINZ Entertainment Center in Studio City, CA. The focus of the event was to raise awareness for the Sickle Cell Disease and celebrate the 100th year of discovery of the disease.

Celebrity guests and supporters of the cause arrived ready to bowl and have fun! The event brought awareness to the Sickle Cell Disease and an overall good time as attendees had dance sessions while still bowling in the tournament.  Many of which spoke on their dear kinship with KiKi Shepard, the event’s guest list consisted of Jenifer Lewis, James Picken’s, Jr. (Grey’s Anatomy), Kim Whitley, Obba Babatunde, Sheree Fletcher (Hollywood Exes), Dawnn Lewis, Dorien Wilson, Elise Neal, Dondre Whitfield, Salli Richardson-Whitfield, Mari Morrow, Michael Jai White, and many others in the entertainment industry.

Many of the guests had actual personal reasons to support the Sickle Cell Disease. Dondre Whitfield and Salli Richardson-Whitfield expressed, "Our Best friend’s daughter has sickle cell, if we do an event and the money is going to charity, we are there! Actor Alimi Ballard also spoke on how he has numerous cousins that have suffered from the disease and stated, KiKi is an icon and person I love, had to support without question."

"Think we all have a personal relation to Sickle Cell being that it affects African Americans so greatly." – Daphne Waynes & Sheree Fletcher;

"I have friends that have relatives that did fight for it… good to be here and bring awareness to what’s going on in real life." – Porsha Coleman.

Although everyone did not have personal connection with the disease, all had similar thoughts such as: "I’ve seen how it has affected our community through the years." – Norwood Young;

Dawnn Lewis expressed that the K.I.S. Foundation continues to create opportunities for Sickle Cell honorees, aid in providing healthcare they need, and participate in efforts for continuing education, like going to college.  In response to currents talks of A Different World reunion, she excitingly expressed, It’s amazing that people are still interested… and they in works of establishing a speaking tour for the cast to commemorate their 25th anniversary.

K.I.S. Foundation correspondent for the night, Miss Sabah briefly shared her story as a Sickle Cell Disease survivor.  Being diagnosed at three weeks old, she knows the pain that goes with medicine, surgeries, and almost having her life at risk a few times. She appreciates that people want to know her story and expressed that most people do not know: It’s not just in African Americans… it’s genetics, in your blood… and you often don’t see it on the outside appearance. Through medicine and vitamins, she remains a survivor!

KiKi Shepard shared that the event was finally able to reach a lot of corporations and get their participation. We know that means even more resources to work towards the cause and we congratulate the K.I.S. Foundation on another successful Celebrity Bowling Challenge to raise Sickle Cell Awareness.

Summer Crosley: Helping to Protect Our Planet In Style

Model and actress Summer Crosley uses her beauty to help conserve the ocean. "Most people fail to realize the importance of ocean life conservation to protect our planet.
I want to remind my peers and the youth community that littering puts our beautiful wildlife — dolphins, whales, sea turtles, tropical fish at risk of endangerment and extinction." ~Summer Crosley

IM: When you think of fall fashion, what comes to mind?
SC: I think of Chic dressy pants with a satin body suit and some awesome heels, maybe throw in a trench coat to really set it off.

IM:In all of your travels as a model, tell us some of your favorite places you have shot and why
SC: Bali and Fiji, the water is amazing, the ocean, the trees, everything about it!   Both of these places are so alive and they both make me really appreciate the oceans and all the life we have in the oceans, the fish, reef, coral, etc.

IM: Tell us about your acting career and what has been different between modeling and acting
SC: Acting and modeling are both similar, and I love both!  Modeling is great because you get to have this beautiful hair and makeup and be styled in amazing clothes and shoot at some of the prettiest locations!   Acting is fun because it really allows me to use my communication skills and play someone for the day that is not me! I get to act out my life according to the role.   Its always fun being someone else for the day

IM: Look in your purse and tell us 5 items that you have in there now.   SC: iphone, lip closs, sunscreen , credit cards, mirror

IM: What are your favorite beauty items you must always have when you travel (i.e. a special lotion, perfume, blush, lip gloss, bronzer etc)?
SC: La mer suncreen , vitamin e oil, nars bronzer, burt bees lip moisturizer

IM: When you are not working, what are some things you enjoy doing?
SC: I enjoy anything outdoors, biking along the beach, hiking, running, watching a good movie, exploring and checking out new spots!  And cooking good food, I love to make my own dinners

IM: If you were given unlimited cash, which designers would you adorn your closet with?
SC: Gucci, Rebecca Taylor, Marc Jacobs, D&G, Frye boots!

IM: Are there any projects you are working on, modeling or acting?
SC: I just shot for a Rich and Skinny jeans, and will be appearing next season on Californication!

IM: Is there anything additional you would like to share with our readers?

SC: To please help make a difference in helping to protect our oceans, if you could just pick up 1 piece of trash on the beach it will make a huge difference!

Designer Carolina Herrera delivers another solid line for Spring/Summer 2013 during day 4 of Mercedes Benz Fashion Week. Hands down she one of my most favorite designers to watch. She is brilliant with mixing fabrics, colors and prints to perfection. I guarantee she will will be a dominating name in my "Most Favorites" in my Editor's Picks from MBFW Spring/Summer 2013. “With my clothing and fragrances, I believe that it is best to be realistic, but to always mix a bit of fantasy with reality. It’s the same with life, really.” ~Carolina Herrera (via MBFW website)
