Dancing with the Stars reigning champ, Karina Smirnoff was fire on ice this week at The Standard hotel’s ice skating rink in NYC. The pro dancer proved to lucky onlookers that she doesn’t need a dance floor to show off her sexy moves.

Karina took a break from the cold weather and popped a Cold-EEZE during her time on the ice at the swanky hotel. Afterwards, she warmed herself up inside with some hot chocolate before heading over to Madison Square Garden where she had a courtside seats for the Knicks.

MTV, www.mtv.com, today announced a weeklong celebration of year in music in which it will name the year’s best artists, songs and performances. For the first time, MTV is pulling together its music powerhouses from MTV News, MTV.com and MTV Music & Talent, to collaborate on three different year end lists: EDM (electronic dance artist of the year), song of the year and artist of the year.

Beginning Monday, December 12, from 8am to 9am ET, during MTV’s morning music hours, AMTV, editors from MTV News, MTV Music & Talent, and MTV.com will take part in a spirited debate, where they will reveal their collective choices for best EDM (electronic dance artist of the year) joined by MTV Iggy (Monday, December 12^TH) song of the year (Wednesday, December 14^th) and artist of the year (Thursday, December 15^th). During AMTV, the panel will countdown their selections from #10 to #3, leaving the audience in limbo to debate the list. Each day at 4:59pm ET, Sway will reveal the top choices and present the award to the #1 pick. After the winner is revealed, the acceptance speech will run sporadically throughout our primetime hours. In today’s society, we each have many decisions we have to make on a daily basis, some more complex than others. Thankfully, "Dishcrawl DC" isn’t one of the more complex decisions on the list; it is an easy, no-brainer decision. In fact, this event is so awesome that they take ALL of the decision-making and thought processing out of the equation. All you have to do is enjoy!

They choose the date, they choose the time, they choose the locations, they choose the dishes, they choose the order in which you experience each of the four locations...they even bring 49 other happy, fun and interesting people for you to meet and eat with. In fact, it is the most simple and amazing on-going food tasting experience that I know of in Washington, DC. Insert the pounding sound of my stamp of approval and an oversized-melodramatic stamp into the picture (smile).

The first ever DishCrawl DC was headed up by JoAnn Pham, the delightful Ambassador for the evening and her assistant Katherine. JoAnn opened the event by explaining exactly what Dishcrawl’s mission is. “This is a chance to have a gathering each month for you to come out and taste the local food within your neighborhood and socialize. We hope you get to meet some great friends today and try some new food that you may not had the chance to try before and have a really great time.”

In the Penn Quarter neighborhood starting at 8^th and D Streets, NW, four restaurants were chosen and two items were provided at each location.

Teaism was our meeting place and first tasting experience. With the help of nametags we were able to mix and mingle with one another before the first tasting experience began.

Michelle Brown, one of the owners of Teaism discussed that one of the reason’s they opened the store was “so that people could come and drink beautiful, pure and exquisite teas.” Their food concept is inspired Asia and influenced by one world “wholesome.” Michelle stated that they do not use any high fructose corn syrup, MSG, or trans fats.“We use very pure fats. We cook with rice-brand oil only, no canola, no soy oil... we use a little bit of coconut and olive oil and we are bringing flax and hemp into the menu to supplement your heath.” They pride themselves on making most of their items from scratch to avoid having soy in their foods. Teaism has plans to open a new location in Old Town Alexandria Virginia in the spring of 2012

The two items presented were the following:

Soba Noodle Salad: Vegetarian Korean style noodle salad with napa cabbage and sugar snap peas drizzled with a spicy Korean chile sauce

Dog Bite: grilled sliced smoked chicken apple sausage with togarashi mayo with jicama-slaw in a ficelle roll

Noodles, dog bite, the freshly made mayonnaise spiced blend was the common favorite.

A few comments from the group included:

“I really like the spicy mayonnaise aioli spread that was on the dog bite”“The kick in the noodles was great”

The array of Asian teas accompanied each sampling very well.

The second stop on the Dishcrawl was at Meatballs.

The mushroom sauce was the hit. Regardless of which type of meatball the crowd chose, the crowd favorite was the mushroom sauce and the bread.

“It would be nice if the sauce came in a dipping cup, that way you could dip your mini into the sauce that way every bite would be the amount of sauce you want on each bite.”

All of the seafood comes directly from their father’s seafood processing plant in Maine who has been in the business for over 35 years. Sourcing their drinks, food, décor and even employees from Maine, Brian said they try to bring as much of Maine to DC as possible.

My sentiments in that I enjoyed the lobster roll so much that I dreamed about it (literally) the next 2 days and can’t wait to get back down there to buy one. Why was it so good? Brian explained how they prepare their signature lobster roll.

“We take a New England Style split-topped bun, we butter each side, toast it. Put a little bit of mayonnaise, chilled seafood, lemon butter and add spices on top of that,” said Brian.

The last stop of the evening was at Red Velvet Cupcake:

Were the motto of fresh baking is taken seriously. They bake everything fresh and daily and are open 8am-11pm M-F and 9am-11pm Sat/Sun.

“We have bakers in here 23 hours a day making sure we have fresh product for every day part.” “In our commitment to the neighborhood we donate to non-profit organizations on a daily basis. So if we have left over cupcakes and you are involved in a non-profit organization and you want to request our day-old cupcakes, we are happy to give them to you,” said Tracy Wilson, General manager for the store.

The red velvet cupcake is a signature favorite that everyone enjoyed thoroughly, yet it was the vanilla bean cupcake that people were fight over if there were extras given out. And rightfully so, as they use Madagascar bourbon vanilla and layer the vanilla flavor in this tiny piece of heaven.

Some comments included:

“The cupcakes melted in my mouth, the cake was moist and the flavors blended very well together.”

“I loved the red velvet, and as much as I love red velvet, that vanilla bean cupcake was the best ever. Its not like typical cake batter...it seams like there was something else in there because it was really good.”

When I randomly asked people if they would visit the location again, everyone said yes. Some even said they would travel from a far distance to get that vanilla bean cupcake.

While all of the locations were absolutely wonderful, and different crowd members had different favorites, we all walked away with new friends, a full belly, and a history of smiles and good tastes in our mouths. This was definitely an amazing kick-off to the first ever Dishcrawl DC.

The premiere issue of CenterStage1 Magazine was released on Monday October 10, 2011 and celebrated at a private event in Dupont Circle, Washington, DC at Dirty Martini.

Set on the backdrop of one of its magazine features, the atmosphere was laid back and chic.

The appetizers and drinks were flowing and associates of the magazine mingled and viewed over-sized articles placed around the room. All invited guest were VIP's to the magazine being staff, features or supporters of the publication.

Actor and author Tray Chaney (featured on pgs 32-33 CLICK HERE TO READ) was there showing his support of the publication with his beautiful wife Aisha. The actor was very gracious and down to earth interacting with fans and supporters of both his writings and his TV work.

Singer B.Blunt (featured on pgs 28-29 CLICK HERE TO READ), who performed with his band CoolFire that night, was on deck shaking hands and kissing babies...ok, well maybe there were no babies to kiss, but he was warm and kind to all of his fans and supporters as well.

Media supporters Tiffany Alexander (Gloss Magazine) and Lisa Dove Washington (Celebrity Charity Magazine) were both stylish in their black dresses and L. Michelle of Soul Notes Arts and Entertainment was there to show her support as well in an adorable black cap.
CenterStage1 Magazine is proud to have a staff as eclectic and broad as the content we produce. While some of contributors are scattered across the country, almost all of the staff local to Washington, DC was in attendance.

Some staff members in attendance were David J. Orr, Tahira Mohamed, Saudia Harris, Omri Malul, Reggie Campbell, Donell Sellow, Trevis Cage, Paige Robinson, Yolonda "Coffeedreamz" Coleman, Marv "The Barb,"Kiesha Hardge, Monica Mathis and others. Additionally, there were family members, friends and long-time supporters of Ideal PR Media at this intimate gathering.

The zucchini fries, fried calamari and mini sliders were definitely the crowd food favorites, it was the delicate chocolate truffles made for each guest that had people talking the next day. Handmade by the Editor-in-Chief herself, each guest of the event walked away with a small bag of truffles wrapped in a decorative green leaf to symbolize the fall issue and match the color scheme of Dirty Martini.

After the private gathering on the 2nd floor of the establishment, the guest retreated to the first floor, were seated for dinner and enjoyed the live jazz music of CoolFire featuring B.Blunt. For an even more special treat, CenterStage1 Magazine guest and Jazz great Sharon Clark graced the microphone and sang a couple selections. B.Blunt and CoolFire finished the night with jazzy renditions of new and old favorites.

The next issue of CenterStage1 Magazine releases on November 10, 2011 and will be publish bi-monthly (every other month) starting January 2012.

Last Night, VEVO presented a private “Six Feet Deep” 3D experience at Hollywood Forever Cemetery powered by Dubset. Guests were handed 3D glasses when they arrived to enjoy the world’s first-ever private 3D experience with a celebrity DJ performance and were treated to snacks by popchips and an open bar with Belvedere cocktails. In addition to the live DJ performance, guests watched a special video tribute to DJ AM provided by Dubset. Costumes were judged by the souls who lay still six feet deep and prizes were awarded for best costumes.

Jamie King was captured snacking on popchips and hanging out with Topher Grace at the Halloween party held at the last night. The 2 arrived together (with 2 other people) around 9:30 and hung out with the crowds till after midnight. They were spotted mingling with the crowds and fighting with light swords.

Evan Ross, showed up dressed as a vampire and was seen hanging out near the dj booth as Joel and Benji Madden rocked the party and snacked on popchips in the dj booth.

Other party guests included Paris Hilton, dressed as mini mouse, Nicky Hilton and Brandon Davis who all arrived together; the latter were not dressed in costume. They were hanging out at a table off the dance floor, running through the crowd and dancing till about 1.

Thanks to improvements in treatment and early detection, millions of women are surviving breast cancer today. Whether you’re worried about developing breast cancer, making decisions about treatment, or trying to stay well after treatment, here are some known facts about breast cancer. Breast cancer is a disease in which malignant (cancer) cells form in the tissues of the breast. It is considered a heterogeneous disease—differing by individual, age group, and even the kinds of cells within the tumors themselves. Obviously no woman wants to receive this diagnosis, but hearing the words “breast cancer” doesn’t always mean an end. It can be the beginning of learning how to fight, getting the facts, and finding hope.

Each year it is estimated that nearly 200,000 women will be diagnosed with breast cancer and more than 40,000 will die. Approximately 1,700 men will also be diagnosed with breast cancer and 450 will die each year. The evaluation of men with breast masses is similar to that in women, including mammography.

Breast cancer is the most common cancer among women in the United States, other than skin cancer. It is the second leading cause of cancer death in women, after lung cancer. The chance of a woman having invasive breast cancer some time during her life is a little less than 1 in 8. The chance of dying from breast cancer is about 1 in 35. Breast cancer death rates have been going down. This is probably the result of finding the cancer earlier and better treatment. Right now there are more than 2½ million breast cancer survivors in the United States.

What are the risk factors? Being overweight and having a history of high saturated fat intake increases the risk. Half of all women are diagnosed over the age of 65, so this means that the other 50% are under the age of 65. The use of alcohol is clearly linked to an increased risk of developing breast cancer. The risk increases with the amount of alcohol consumed. In addition to a family history of breast cancer (in particular mother and sister), if you have had past radiation therapy to the chest area, or a history of hormone treatments (estrogen and progesterone, or gene changes— including BRCA1, BRCA2, and others), you could place yourself in a higher risk bracket. It is important to get those breast examinations. It is never too early to begin that process...schedule a mammogram!

Last night in Annapolis, Maryland, “The We Believe Foundation” along with Robert Andrew Salons and Spas presented “FACES: A Night of Pink Hope” which was presented in an effort to “give back hope to the community and bring a new voice to young women battling breast cancer!”

Hosted by the most fabulous Paul Wharton, make over guru/model coach and “6^th Housewife” on Bravo’s “The Real Housewives of DC," the event included a VIP cocktail hour, hors d’overes, silent auction, live auction, dance performances by the Washington Redskins Cheerleaders, the Baltimore Ravens Cheerleaders and a runway fashion show.

In addition to a host of VIP guest who paid $150 per ticket, celebrity couple Ginuwine (singer) and Sole (rapper) we there to support this event, as cancer has personally affected their household with the lost of Ginuwine’s mother to the disease and multiple members in Sole’s family affected as well.

The most special aspect about this runway show was that it not only included fashion models, but it also included cancer survivors and a short video snippet of them receiving pampering by Robert Andrew spa and salon while sharing their tear jerking stories.

“Love, Forgiveness and Faith.” He placed singer Ginuwine on the spot by walking over to him on the front row of the show seating to ask him his 3 words, and he said without hesitation, “God is good.” Well said Ginuwine...exactly the three words that wraps up the evening. Every now and then, someone affects history on a massive scale. Steve Jobs is one of these people. As the CEO, chairman and co-founder of Apple, Inc, Steve contributed more than just innovative applications and devices that changed how the world operated, he contributed words of wisdom that altered how we think and changed how humanity believed.

Love your iPhone? Can’t live without your iPod? Hooked on your new iPad? Thank Steve for all of that. In fact, Steve was responsible for over 338 patent products ranging from computers to user interfaces in his lifetime.

In addition to great applications and Apple products, Steve was behind the creative film projects such as “Toy Story,” “Finding Nemo,” “The Incredibles,” and “A Bugs Life” among other dynamic Pixar Studio productions. When Disney bought out Pixar, Jobs became the largest individual shareholder (7%) owning more than Disney family member Roy E. Disney, who died owning about 1% of the company.

Consumers and celebrities are speaking out about their sadness and the impact his loss is having on them. Twitter and Facebook has been overflowing with quotes and images of Steve Jobs.

Friday, September 16^th , KiKi Shepard’s K.I.S. Foundation hosted the 8^th Annual Celebrity Bowling Challenge at PINZ Entertainment Center in Studio City, CA. The focus of the event was to raise awareness for sickle cell disease, and to benefit the K.I.S. Foundation, Inc. and the Dorothy H. Shepard Scholarship Fund.

Celebrity guests arrived individually, with partners and some with families. The mood of the night was filled with great energy and laughter. All were excited to support Kiki Shepard and encourage sickle cell anemia awareness. The event’s guest list included Wayne Brady, James Pickens Jr. (Grey’s Anatomy), Bill Bellamy, Harold Perrineau (Lost & The Best Man), Jackee’, Vanessa Bell Calloway, Obba Babatunde, Dawnn Lewis (A Different World), Chico Benymon (Half & Half), Kim Whitley, Michael Jai White (Why Did I Get Married), Mari Morrow, VH1 reality stars and others in the entertainment industry.

When speaking with triple-threat Wayne Brady, he expressed the concern that, WE don’t know about this, WE don’t know that WE suffer from sickle cell. Not excusing his own lack of knowledge of the disease, he stated, I did not know WE suffered! He has since done his research and was in full support to show up, bowl and raise awareness. Academy Award winner Jon Voight (father of Angelina Jolie) spoke on how beautiful it is was to see everyone come together and support. He too enjoyed just being among his friends. It was obvious that many shared that same feeling throughout the night.

Also in attendance was Miss Black California, Constance Reese… she spoke of her personal testimony in relation to the sickle cell disease and appreciates, KiKi Shepard for taking such initiative to bring awareness. Her mother has sickle cell anemia and has outlived her 12-year life expectancy along with having 2 children. Quite a testimony! Her platform is coincidently: Youth Awareness of Sickle Cell Anemia. She believes, it’s important to not only get tested, but also get involved.

Ten Years Passed, But The Tragedy is Still Fresh: Remembering 9/11

Ten years ago today the devastating tragedy of terrorism struck the soils of the United States of America. More than 3,000 people died from that attack started by 19 men. Thousands of people were injured, yet all of America and most of the world will always be affected by the actions which took place the morning of September 11, 2001.

Like most incidents, there is 6-degrees of separation...in this case, for many, it was only one degree. Most people know someone who had a loved one parish, or had friends and family themselves expire from the horrible incident.

I remember visiting the grounds of the World Trade Center in New York City the year after the attack and instantly began crying. To see the large amount of empty space and know it was that exact area where people felt helpless seeing their fate and could do nothing about it. Most people know exactly where they were that morning, and can tell you exactly what they were doing when they saw, heard or experience the tragedy first hand. With the recent natural disasters of hurricanes, earthquakes, wild fires, the feeling of being helpless to something you see but cannot stop adds another layer of sensitivity to those who were physically caught in the attacks.

The result? Ten years later "America The Beautiful" is still standing, but we are forever changed. Not just socially and economically with the sky-high gas prices, inconvenient flight process and permanently altered access to national monuments, but also emotionally. September 11, 2001 will be scarred in the hearts of Americans forever. The tragedy itself represents a much larger complication with the problems in the world, the warped thinking that separates us by culture, religion and beliefs. This tragedy represents a complicated mind-set, which hopefully, one day will be washed and made clean.

The root of hatred is fear. The root of fear is ignorance. Committing an act of hatred simply because of a person's religion, nationality, beliefs, or even something as simple as their residence is an ignorant form of action. Killing people because of it, is simply unspeakable.

Yet this type of tragedy is not new to America, but the form of the tragedy rings across the board where all races and nationalities were affected the exact same way, at the exact same time.

Historically, African Americans were beaten, hung, shot, hosed down, raped and burned alive...simply because they were African American. Thousands of African American people were killed, injured and attacked, and an innumerable number died because of slavery. But this only affected one sector of Americans and was actually inflicted by American's themselves.

Are we guilty of being hypocritical? While the tragedy of 9/11 is incomparable and much more serious in reality, but in theory, can it be paralleled to the concept of a minor occurrence such as, "I can fight and beat up my brother or sister but you cannot?" Are we to think that as Americans we can treat our fellow Americans badly, discriminate, perform acts of violence and hate towards each other, simply because one person feels the other person is beneath them...but get upset when someone from another country does the same thing?

It is not right when they do it.
It is not right when we do it to each other.
It just is not right...no matter what.

While there is nothing good about what happened on 9/11 in any shape or form, like Maya Angelou said, "Still We Rise," and have found a silver lining in moving forward. This incident found a way to bridge the gap between ALL Americans. ALL Americans. There was no color, race, nationality nor religion exempt from this tragedy. The firemen did not go into the building pulling out the White people first and told the Blacks and Mexicans to wait for the "next-go-round." When people were helping to pick up each other from the ground, covered in soot, you could not see the race of a person, everyone was gray.

The United States of America's national song rings true and clear nearly 200 years after it was written (written in 1814). "The Star Spangled Banner" reminds us that when times get hard, we join together and unite and we are ONE nation under God. How much stronger we would be as a country and as a people if we united under this concept in the absence of tragedy? Let us work on forever improving our minds, spirits and souls to continue to make America a better place, extending to make the world a better place as well. Marc Anthony Takes Fans for a Ride

Laz Alonso, Wendy Raquel Robinson, Anthony Anderson and Michael Jai White Share Valuable Knowledge With Black Enterprise Golf & Tennis Challenge 2011 Participants

On Saturday September 3, 2011 American Express partnered with Black Enterprise to present a luncheon and discussion with actors Laz Alonso (Avatar, Jumping The Broom), Wendy Raquel Robinson (The Game, Steve Harvey Show), Anthony Anderson (Law & Order, The Departed) and Michael Jai White (Why Did I Get Married, The Dark Knight). Hosted by one of the American Express Executives, This sit down conversation was a wonderful way to entertain Black Enterprise Golf and Tennis Challenge 2011 participants as they enjoyed their lunch after being on the courts and green all morning.

Speaking of the lunch...the food was delicious. Participants were treated to a buffet of endless options including baby-back ribs, spare ribs, key-lime grouper (this was my personal favorite), fried plantains, jasmine rice, salad and more.

Anthony Anderson, the first to come out and entertain the crowd. When asked about his original name "Tasty Tony, the one and only, everyone else is a phony," he had this to say, "That was the first time I touched the mic in an attempt to do comedy, had I given up, I wouldn't be sitting before you right now."

Next to come onto the stage was actor Michael Jai White. Anthony and Michael provided the audience with a comical exchange around Anthony's desire to be included in the sequel to Black Dynamite the movie. Anthony told Michael, "I really did enjoy Black Dynamite and was upset that I was not in that urban film...and as long as you know because I have made you confess in front of the people that I am going to be in sequel to Black Dynamite." Michael replied saying, "If I can have an Anthony Anderson in Black Dynamite 2, believe me I am going to."

When Michael Jai White was put on the spot about a more serious topic, regarding project production and his feelings surrounding the criticism Tyler Perry receives about the content of the projects he produces, Michael had this to say, "If people are looking for something to criticize, they are going to find it no matter what. The thing is, weather you like Tyler Perry or don't like Tyler Perry you cannot over look the positive nature in what he has done. There are some of the strongest Black images we have ever seen come out of the Tyler Perry camp in each and every one of his movies, but folks want to look at the lowest common denominator that you have to look at...but there are people that they represent, and people who if they didn't have that character, they wouldn't be catching the messages that are set down for them." Michael will be starring in the new Tyler Perry TV show, "For Better Or For Worse" coming to Television sometime in the fall. Next to join the stage was a a strong female presence, Ms. Wendy Raquel Robinson. Wendy spoke about a project that has been near and dear to her heart for over a decade called "Amazing Grace Conservatory." This organization which she founded 16 years ago services the youth in South Central Los Angeles in all areas of the performing arts. Wendy proudly said, "Lives are being changed, hearts are being healed with communication...it's happening at Amazing Grace Conservatory."

The last treat for this event was actor Laz Alonso. The women especially cheered very loudly as he mad his way onto the stage, even fluttering the presence of the host. Laz spoke about his Howard University pride, but also extended his comments to say that he feels all HBCU's (Historically Black Colleges and Universities) provide a training ground for people to be the best you that you could be...and it was not about what group, sport or organization you were in, but just being a great academic mind in your class rooms gave you clout. He also spoke about how his choices in deciding on an agent which believed in him and his potential made all of the difference in his career. He noted that actors in the business must be aware of their potential and worth and be very choosy when deciding whose hands to place their careers in.

All of the participants appeared to have a wonderful time eating the food, listening to the interviews and winning prizes including shirts and American Express gift cards simply by showing up and putting their business cards inside of a bowl.

The first annual Playground Festival 2011 took place in Irvine, California on September 3rd and 4th. Several artists of all genres were in attendance for a vast crowd having a great time! With several food booths, $1 beers and tee shirt booths, one of the sponsors of the Playground Festival 2011 included "Activate Water." Some of the performers included, The Game, Panic! at the Disco, Big Sean, Kid Ink, Too Short and Ditch. While the following audience of the performers were diverse, the energy from the crowd combined with the artists’ performances was nothing less of wholesome and electrifying fun. Unlike some events where the big name artist may or may not show, Playground Festival 2011 delivered what they promoted and all acts were in attendance.

The events coordinators, Jason Winkler and Dean Abramitz expressed they were quite pleased with event’s turnout and looking forward to planning a New Years Eve event with the same concept in mind. After speaking with Jason Winkler, it was evident to event took much preparation and marketing.

Tamala Jones shows that with hard work, one can move from a condo into a "castle." Always pegged for her innocent smile and girl-next-door appeal, most people were introduced to her as an actress in 1997 through the film "Booty Call." Ms. Jones has come a long way since that film and can now be seen on prime time on ABC's #1 Drama "CASTLE." While TV is where Tamala started her national acting career with small appearances TV shows "On Our Own" and "Parenthood," there is nothing small about Tamala's role as Dr. Lanie Parish on America's favorite Television channel. On this show, Dr. Parish is a sassy, sexy coroner, who encourages Beckett (Stana Katic) and Castle (Nathan Fillion) to act on their escalating feelings for each other. Jones’ character was originally written for a Caucasian woman and was only meant to be just a recurring role. However, Tamala captivated casting directors and the character was not only re-written for her, but also transformed into a starring role. Season Four will show the development of the relationship Castle viewers are anticipating.

When asked about the correlation between her personal life and character, she admitted that she has never been to a real morgue, but that she is "so goofy sometimes it's ridiculous." And that is why we love Tamala. She is a home-girl who keeps it real, and can step on set and be sophisitcated, in charge and in control.

CASTLE will return on Monday, September 19th at 10:00pm on ABC.

In addition to Television, Tamala can been seen in the new film which she co-produced called "35 and Ticking" alongside Kevin Hart, Nicole Ari Parker, Megan Good, Wendy Raquel Robinson and Keith Robinson, directed by Russ Parr. She said she is looking to grow from co-producing to being an executive producer and eventually directing. Tamala noted admiring the career moves of Debbi Allen and said she aspires to take the journey of expanding the hats she wears.

I remember meeting Tamala while working on the film "Head of State," which was filmed in Baltimore Maryland, starred and directed by Chris Rock. Tamala was kind and professional to all of the cast and crew and was a joy to watch in action. I had an opportunity to get to know Tamala on a more personal level while at the Charlie Mack party for Peace weekend one year. She has a kind heart and a giving spirit. I am happy to see that she is in a role of power as an African American woman on a major prime time Television show. That says a lot. The After Glow: Alpha Phi Alpha MLK Tribute Post Reception Event

If you were not in Washington, DC this past weekend, you missed it. There are certain situations where words are just not enough to explain...THIS is one of those situations. Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Incorporated presented the most amazing series of events in honor of the National Memorial Dedication for Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. The historical Mayflower Hotel on Connecticut Avenue, NW was the host hotel and sight for most of the private events. In addition to TV One and Radio One owner (and Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority member) Cathy Hughes and I having on the same shoes, we shared a similar excitement regarding the purpose of the event for Dr. King. When Cathy Hughes was asked what Dr. King's legacy meant to her she said, "Its the inspiration to know that it is possible to do what I do, and to open doors for other individuals and to be filled with love...because love conquers everything." Nicely said soror! Cathy Hughes is s shining example of how the efforts of Dr. King have allowed others to reach the mountain top. And as Ms. Hughes so eloquently put it, it is beyond what you have accomplished for yourself, but more about how you use what you have accomplished to help others.

"The After Glow" reception took place after the Tribute Program at the Dar Constitution Hall. Guests were adorned in ballgowns, white ties and black tails, basking in the "after glow" of the dynamic performances at Constitution Hall. Sponsored by Grey Goose, The ballrooms were filled with music, food and every type of Grey Goose flavored drink possible.

Some guests were supporting Alpha Phi Alpha member and host of the After Glow event, Hill Harper by purchasing his series of books.

I personally own all four of Hill Harper's books as he has been a friend to Ideal PR since 2003. Upon entering the After Glow, a young lady assisting the book signing did a great job of speaking to everyone who was in line waiting for Hill to personally sign their books. When I walked by she asked me if I had his "new" book, I replied, "I have all four of his books." She then said to me, "Oh I bet you don't this one (referring to "The Wealth Cure")," I replied to her by saying, "Yes, I do, in fact it arrived in the mail today...The book has been available for 3 days now, and I purchased it through Amazon.com." I watched Hill Harper interact with his supporters with a warm, genuine energy before he greeted me with a smile and friendly hug.

After speaking to Mr. Harper I made my way into the first ballroom where a live Jazz band was playing upbeat tunes to a crowd mingling and eating sweet treats from the center piece table.The ballroom across the hall was filled with guests dancing on the dance floor to the tunes of the DJ. Then I noticed radio/TV personality Adimu on the microphone adding additional energy to the crowd's excitement.

While enjoying the various passed hors d'oeuvres (lamb chops, chicken skewers, puff pastries, etc.) and grabbing a few slices of zucchini from massive vegetable table I ran into Mr. Media Man himself, Jawn Murray and singer Kenny Lattimore, who performed the opening song for the tribute at Constitution Hall (stay tuned for exclusive video footage). It is always a pleasure to see Jawn's smiling face as he always brings happiness into the room.

Among other notables who were at the post reception were Lalah Hathaway, Daphne and Tim Reid, Dawnn Lewis, Della Reese, Monique Pridgeon, Cynné Simpson, Omari Hardwick, Keshia Knight Pulliam, Marvin Winans, Jesse Jackson, Herman Mason and hundreds of finely dressed Alpha Phi Alpha men and their dates and others.

It was the sister of the late Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., Christine King Farris, the only living sibling of Dr. King, who I had the pleasure of sitting next to towards the end of the night. Speaking with her was the highlight of the evening. To see the peace and calmness in her eyes and feel the power of her presence was truly an honor to have experienced.

MLK National Memorial Dedication Tribute Program "MLK: A Monumental Life"

On Friday August 26, 2011 Alpha Phi Alpha presented a historical tribute program for Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.'s national memorial dedication. Although the weather in Washington, DC was unpredictable, the Gold Carpet was undoubtedly fabulous. Faith, Rochelle and their team (Isiah, Pam, Stephanie Abdullah, and others) were gracious in greeting all of the media and VIP attendees and of course the fabulous Toni Thompson made sure the carpet ran without a noticeable hitch...in a floor length gold dress nonetheless!

While some events were cancelled given by other organizations, this particular tribute program at the Dar Constitution Hall given by Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity was not one of them. Everyone was excited about the purpose of the event, many even having a loss for words as to what that day really meant to them. Some could remember where they were the day Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., gave his "I have a dream" speech, and marveled at the correlation between where the speech was given, and where his physical memorial has been place for an eternity.

Participants for this program included a large group of VIP participants such as Terrence Howard, Hill Harper, Della Reese, Phylicia Rashad, Victoria Rowell, Tramaine Hawkins, Kenny Lattimore, Keshia Knight Pulliam, Cuba Gooding Jr., Nate Parker, David Oyelowo, Jasmine Guy, Micahel T., Lalah Hathaway, Clifton Davis, Sheryl Lee Ralph, Ann Nesby, Fonzworth Bentley, and many others.

The program was a beautiful mix of narration, skits, dance and musical performances that encapsulated the life of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. from birth to death. Dr King's story was literally brought to life with the energy of the program having extreme emotional highs including Tramaine Hawkin's performance of "A Change," to emotional heaviness with Bernadette Stanis' narration of the accounts of Emit Till and how that affected the civil rights movement. Some of the songs performed with skits and dances included "Freedom," "Tired," and "Guide My Feet While I Run This Race." All of the musical selections were performed live, with a full orchestra. All dances routines were performed with precision. When, "Ain't Gonna Let Nobody Turn Me Around," was performed, it stuck a chord within my heart. I could feel the struggle, the pain and despair being conveyed, and yet there was evidence of the hope and determinations in the spirits of that group of people to keep on going...no matter what.

Occasionally I enjoy parts of a program, and rarely enjoy the majority of a program. However, this particular tribute, "MLK: A Monumental Life," given by the men of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity was historically the best program I have ever experienced. I was captivated from beginning to end...and this was a long show, upwards of 4 hours. And while it was lengthy in time, every moment of this tribute was amazing...absolutely amazing. I was not alive when Dr. King gave his infamous "I Have a Dream" speech. I was not old enough to understand what was happening when the concept of the Dr. King memorial was initiated by the men of Alpha Phi Alpha in 1984. However, on August 26, 2011 inside the walls of Constitution Hall, I became one with Dr. King's legacy, his memorial and his dream, and will never be the same from this day forward. Thank you Dr. King for fulfilling your purpose in life. I am honored to have been a part of this historical event.

The theme, "“M.L.K.: A Monumental Life.” The attire, White Tie and Black Tails. Everyone looked fabulous! The atmosphere of the gold carpet was elegant and warm adorned in Black and Gold, the colors of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc, the organization of which Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr was a member.

Alpha Phi Alpha Kicks Off The Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Dedication with A Jazz Mixer

Last night at the historic Mayflower Hotel in Washington, DC the brothers of Alpha Phi Alpha kicked off the weekend of celebration activities with a Jazz mixer. Some of the sponsors included AARP, Men's Warehouse, Anheuser-Busch and the Atlanta Convention and Visitor's Bureau.

The president of Alpha Phi Alpha Herman "Skip" Mason greeted the guest and confirmed that all of their dedication events taking place Thurs-Saturday were still confirmed to take place. Lamont King dazzled the crowd with his smooth humor and candid wit and kicked the performances off with a bang.

Hosted by Lamont King, DC's sexy (and single) Alpha man, the night included an evening of live jazz performance, passed hors d'oeuvres and private tables fashioned with trays of assorted chocolate dipped strawberries, fresh melons, grilled shrimp skewers, tenderloin crustini, exotic cheese and crackers.

Some of the notables who attended were Della Reese, Council At-large Vincent Orange (Washington, DC), actress Dawnn Lewis (A Different World), Alpha Phi Alpha Present Herman "Skip" Mason, and lawyer Nia Phillips (Obama Appointee) among others. Actress Victoria Rowell (Young and Restless) and comedian Sheryl Underwood (BET) were spotted at the end of the night outside of the ballroom.

The night's opening solo act began with singer Kathleen Bertrand singing a song set that included "Georgia On My Mind." Followed by trumpet player and Alpha man Melvin M. Miller who started his set from the back of the room and worked his way through the crowd.

Next up was Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Incorporated member Miriamm Wright in a vibrant orange satin dress singing a set that included a beautiful rendition of "Summertime." Rodney Perry’s role as a visible support to Mo’Nique, the TV show’s guests and the crowd comes naturally for him. He is a service man. He has serviced our country through the armed forces (Navy), he has serviced our communities through his dedication to being a kind person and he has serviced our need for laughs and mental release through his stand up comedy.

Rodney created his own internet talk show called “The Rodney Perry Show,” where he interviews people from comedian/actor Kevin Hart to actress Angell Conwell. He described himself as a “hipper” Tavis Smiley, in hopes to bridge the gap of a talent pool of people not only is he a fan of, but he feels deserved the added recognition regarding their talent. “You don’t have to wait on people to give you opportunities, with the avenue of the internet you can reach your core audience fairly effectively by turning on the camera and doing your own show.”

These days, while the Mo’Nique show is on hiatus, Rodney is busy doing a comedy tour and working on his radio show that airs on Blog Talk Radio every Monday at 2pm EST called “Rodney Perry Live.” So no matter where you are, if you are near the internet, you can hear and be a part of Rodney Perry’s world every week.

Rodney believes that it is important to stay active and work what you love to do. Staying on the Atlanta comedy scene helped Rodney land his role in Tyler Perry’s “Madea’s Big Happy Family." He said, “I’m a stand up (comedian) first, and every blessing I have ever gotten has been a result of my stand up.” Rodney was performing in a comedy club (in Atlanta) on a Tuesday, went in to read for the part on that same Thursday, received a call back on Saturday to be on set in two days on Monday. Talk about fast, and talk about God's grace!

Rodney had nothing but amazing words to say about working with Tyler Perry and being a part of his movie project. If only Spike Lee could give Mr. Perry a break and see the positive side to what Tyler Perry’s empire is doing for the Black community.

When asked about the Spike Lee/Tyler Perry controversy, Rodney had some very thoughtful words to say. “I don’t think we as people of Color have the luxury of bashing each other on any level. While Tyler Perry’s comedy may not be everybody’s cup of tea, Tyler Perry employs more Black people than anybody in the industry, you have to respect that...he found a way to make it work when there was no way to make it work...Hollywood told Tyler Perry no, so he took his own money (that he made from his plays) and began to fund his own work...he funded the first ten episode of his first TV show (House of Payne) now that is gangsta! To bet your own dollars on yourself, and to see it flourish into a mogul, that is the definition of faith, and you can’t argue with faith.”

You can't argue with faith, and you can't deny that it is Rodney's time to shine.
